WORK
Duffield Hall Nanotechnology Research Facility
Ithaca, New York

Strikingly modern in its appearance, this facility supports similarly modern state of the art nanotechnology research. Highly sensitive experiments require that the floor structure vibrate at less than 2000 micro inches per second. Special clean rooms in the basement are constructed on a 3-foot thick concrete mat founded directly on bedrock to minimize vibrations. The use of traditional reinforcing steel in the concrete was precluded by the need to minimize interference with magnetic fields.
