Florence, South Carolina
Bridging over the existing facility, this five-story addition required structural ingenuity to maintain hospital services throughout construction. A tabletop with a three-dimensional grid of story deep transfer trusses carries the loads around the existing structure down to 90-foot deep drilled shafts. Two oval-shaped steel towers emerge from the podium allowing natural light to penetrate the building to every patient room.
