01.29.21 On Monday, January 25, the AIP Review of Scientific Instruments published “Design and characterization of a low-vibration laboratory with cylindrical inertia block geometry.” The article, by HGA’s Joseph Gibbons and Harvard University’s Dr. Jennifer Hoffman, is the story of an extraordinary lab fit-out. A purpose-built, extremely sensitive piece of equipment precipitated the design of a unique matryoshka-style series of isolation systems. Dr. Hoffman proposed a cylindrical isolation plinth, which was developed with the help of LeMessurier’s David Tuckey. The result is an inverted top-hat shaped isolation plinth set within an isolated cube, inside an isolated building. David contributed his insight on the material properties of concrete, given its composite nature, and how those qualities would impact performance as a whole.
