LeMessurier is proud to announce that Richard A. Henige, a distinguished Principal and technical leader, has been awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). This recognition of Richard’s remarkable 47-year career in structural engineering celebrates the indelible mark he has left on the industry with his significant contributions to the field.

Richard’s journey in engineering began at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned his Master’s degree while studying under renowned structural engineer Bill LeMessurier. After graduating in 1977, he joined LeMessurier and quickly established himself as a leader in the design and engineering of steel structures. Notably, he was selected as part of the team from LeMessurier that conducted a confidential engineering review of the Citicorp Center in New York in 1978, a pivotal moment in his career.

Over the years, Richard has been instrumental in numerous high-profile LeMessurier projects, including the groundbreaking design of the One Post Office Square tower and the dramatic over-build at Shriners Hospital for Children in Boston. His expertise has also been widely recognized beyond the firm, contributing substantially to the Massachusetts State Building Code and national committees with AISC. In this capacity, he played a vital role in advancing industry standards, including the development of the Direct Analysis Method for steel structures.

Richard has authored numerous articles and presentations throughout his career, sharing his extensive knowledge and insights with the engineering community. He has also dedicated time to mentoring young engineers and guest lecturing at Tufts University, fostering the next generation of talent in structural engineering.

As he prepares to retire at the end of 2024, Richard’s legacy will continue to inspire and influence the field of structural engineering for years to come. We congratulate Richard on this well-deserved honor and thank him for his invaluable contributions to LeMessurier and the entire industry.
