Craig Blanchet, Managing Principal at LeMessurier, and Zach Pursley, Senior Associate, Stantec, presented “Rising Above the Big Dig: Structural Innovations in Air-Rights Construction” on Wednesday morning, June 4, at 9:30. Attendees learned how the team behind 400 Summer Street tackled one of Boston’s first air-rights projects in nearly 40 years.

We visited King Open Community Complex, the state’s first proof that net-zero schools are possible, and Boardwalk Campus, which turned that vision into a cost-effective standard. This tour highlighted how both schools integrate sustainability, resilience, and wellness into every aspect of their design.

We toured the Wellesley College Science Complex, the most ambitious building project in the college’s modern history: Transforming an outdated science center into an inviting, integrated, sustainable, and flexible village for STEM education.

We explored the Museum of Science’s ongoing transformation with a tour that spotlighted the glass-enclosed, LEED Platinum-designed Public Science Common that hovers the Charles River, the revamped live animal garden, and the new inclusive “everyone restrooms.”

We toured the award-winning Dearborn STEM Academy, a national model for purpose-built STEM learning environments. Designed to spark innovation, this 128,000 sq. ft. facility blends flexibility and creativity to support cutting-edge STEAM pedagogy.
Building Up, Breathing Easy: A Healthy Urban School

We toured the Josiah Quincy Upper School, a LEED Platinum-targeted high-rise serving 650 students on a compact one-acre site in Boston’s Chinatown. Thoughtful design transformed space limitations into opportunities to advance equity, health, and sustainability for both students and the broader community.
Seaport’s Centerpiece: A Journey Along Harbor Way

Harbor Way breathes new life into the Seaport District, transforming it into a welcoming, walkable destination rooted in its maritime legacy. We explored how 400 Summer Street, One Boston Wharf Road, and 111 Harbor Way activate the promenade with thoughtful, human-centered design.

Attendees experienced the future of live-work-play with a tour of The Hub on Causeway, where innovative design overcame complex infrastructure challenges to create a new hybrid environment encompassing office, residential, hotel, entertainment, and retail.

We discussed how Boston University’s Duan Family Center for Computing & Data Sciences redefines the academic experience with a vertically integrated, fossil fuel–free design that prioritizes sustainability and collaboration. This tour explored the visionary leadership, design process, and carbon-reduction strategies behind one of Boston’s most iconic new buildings.
