The Science Center

Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts

The Science Center at Amherst College brings together several disciplines under one roof. The Center is divided into five distinct building components - two high energy laboratory wings and three pavilions of low intensity uses are organized around a central commons and unified by a dramatic roof canopy. The distinctive roof, covering the multi-story, glass-enclosed commons is comprised of finely crafted skylights that run the length of the building. Designed to achieve the highest levels of sustainability, the building has been built deep into a hill with terraced levels of green roofs and deep overhangs for solar control. The program consists of new teaching and research facilities, along with shared resources including a science library, lecture halls, classrooms, support spaces, conference rooms and social spaces.
