200 Berkeley Street, John Hancock Signage

The iconic John Hancock signature sign returned to 200 Berkeley Street in 2024 after twenty years above Fenway Park's center field. Mounting the 60-foot-by-20-foot illuminated sign on the Back Bay skyline required complex structural engineering in a historic urban context.

The installation positioned the sign atop the Berkeley Building's stepped pyramid roof, twenty-six stories above ground and just below the legendary weather beacon. The project required:

  • 25,000 pounds of structural steel support framework
  • 26,000 feet of electrical wiring and 3,800 feet of data wire integration
  • Custom-engineered mounting system accounting for wind loads at a 495-foot elevation
  • 2,000 feet of liquid-tight conduit for infrastructure integration
  • Structural modifications to accommodate sign weight while preserving the historic facade

The installation required extensive safety systems while maintaining building operations. It involved five months of planning and two days of installation with a 770-ton mobile crane extended to its 500-ft capacity. The steel framing was partially assembled at street level, with the remaining segments hoisted directly into place at the mechanical penthouse level.

The engineered steel frame system distributes loads across the existing structure while maximizing sign visibility from the Charles River approach. The completed installation preserved the building's historic character while incorporating modern engineering solutions over Boston's evolving skyline.
