Harvard/American Repertory Theater Goel Center for Creativity & Performance (under construction)

Boston, MA

Opening in 2026, Harvard's four-story, 85,000-square-foot Goel Center for Creativity & Performance in Allston, Massachusetts, will be the new home to the prestigious American Repertory Theater (ART).

The new ART is a 68,000-square-foot facility with two flexible performance spaces: the West Stage (700-seat capacity) and the East Stage (300-seat capacity), alongside state-of-the-art rehearsal studios, teaching spaces, and an outdoor performance yard.

Designed to achieve the International Living Future Institute's Living Building Challenge Core certification, the building incorporates the following sustainable features:

  • Laminate mass timber, reclaimed brick, and cedar low-impact construction materials
  • Clean energy—including chilled and hot water, and electric utilities—coming from rooftop solar and Harvard's reduced-carbon District Energy Facility
  • Natural ventilation systems
  • Green roof and native plantings for stormwater management

Following teaching hospital design principles, the ART integrates student training with professional theater production. Outdoor performance spaces connect directly to the indoor café and gathering areas, offering public views of performances.
