Student Hall for Exploration and Development (SHED)

Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY

With more than 120,000 sf of new construction, the Student Hall for Exploration and Development (SHED), is a creative hub that brings the arts to the campus center. The SHED, located along the RIT “quarter mile” includes a flexible glass box theater and studios for dance and music. The flexible theater is prominently featured with a large cantilevered east edge, enclosed with a double-skin glass curtainwall, to improve thermal efficiency and mitigate sound transmission between interior and exterior.

Beyond serving as the creative hub, the SHED includes large active classrooms arranged in a stacked and staggered configuration throughout the building's West Wing, with framing sized to minimize vibrations. Makerspaces located around the central area called the “Hub”, foster collaboration and learning. The industrial aesthetic and functionality of the active teaching and maker spaces are emphasized through exposed steel framing for both the main building structure and façade support. Two pedestrian bridges provide a missing link, connecting Wallace Library with Monroe Hall and the Campus Center student union. Completing the project is an 83,000 sf of renovation to Wallace Library.
